Silhouettes You Can Capture on Your Phone

Hey, you. Yes—you, scrolling past your feed, holding your phone, thinking maybe you could never capture something that feels cinematic or magical. Let me tell you: you can. Silhouettes are one of my favorite ways to play with light, mood, and storytelling, and you don’t need fancy gear, just curiosity window light, and your phone.

Here’s the thing: silhouettes aren’t about perfection. They’re about noticing shapes, shadows, and the way light hits. The magic happens when you lean into the unplanned, the spontaneous, the moments that feel real.

A few tips to get you started:

  • Chase the light: use a window during the day

  • Keep it simple: Clean backgrounds remove the clutter

  • Play with posture and shapes: Tilt a head, reach a hand, arch a back. Small gestures make a big impact in silhouette storytelling. Being naked is best so your clothing does not get in the way of your curves.

Can’t wait to see what you create, these shadows might just reveal more than you expect.

You can also take this a step further once you are comfortable.

  • At night light up a plain wall with one colored light.

  • Use a second same colored light and point it at your back- your body should hide the lights.

  • now same settings, this time you’ll be blacked out with a colored background.

The colored lights I did are at the end I was on an ottoman not the floor.
